MEMORIES ... 08/28/2021

Today a soggy sky greeted me with grey clouds lined in a red hue, Magpies getting their breakfast off the lawn... a quiet time...

I am reminded of my childhood and today want to relate a happy time growing up.

My Mum was one of many children, as a child I knew of her twin sisters who lived in the same town but not so much of the others. One day she received a phone call ( we had a party line phone and you had to pick up the receiver and ask a lady for your number and if someone came on the line whilst you were talking you would say "working"..)

In the Christmas holidays we piled into the Ford Escort and headed North ... not to Alaska... but off to Northland, it took all day to get to Whangarei (fongaray) and we went to see another Sister and her husband a lovely couple who I had a lot to do with later in my life. they had no car and walked every where.  Many years later, Hubby and I moved to their town for work and with our  young baby, I told her I had a mouse in the house and she walked all the way to me to help ... lovely.
Oops I digress, we stopped there for a drink and a pitstop and a chatter of years gone by.

Then another hour and a half to Kaitaia ( ki tie a), then on to the little area where the Aunty and Uncle lived. they were caretakers of a holiday home for the Catholic Church brothers who were teachers in the larger city of Auckland.

When we arrived,   it was getting dark and the lovely old house looked amazing ... two large eyes (windows) and a beautiful moustache ( verandah) and two giant Norfolk Pine trees in front, we parked on the lawn .. it was soft and squishy, thick and lush beach grass on top of sand.

We were going to sleep in a tent for a week ... I met two new cousins and we got out the ABBA record and it played most of the time with my cousin and I dancing to it 🙂.

We went to get supplies before the Brothers arrived and cleaned up the house. They were very austere men and not wanting to  talk to children on their break. But I wore them down. 🙂

Mum and Aunty did a cooked breakfast and the washing, then we were free to walk the Ninety mile beach just across the road and watch the waves and seagulls, pick up shells and run and run ...
One day we stopped at a neighbor way up the beach and in his house he had almost a museum of flotsam and jetsam picked up over the years off the beach. Everything was labelled and in cabinets he had built.

We also met a cousin who had a farm and was also a milkman, he drove a tractor around the area with the milk bottles in crates. People put their little crate out with the empty glass bottles in and money and he would take the bottles and replace them with milk bottles ( one pint) with foil caps on top.
He would bring the money to Aunties place at night and she had a 'thingy' that you could put in handfuls of money and it sorted it into denominations that were bagged and taken to the bank.
Over the years times changed and people stole the money so tokens were brought out and then they stole the tokens. The lovely sound of the clattering of glass being put in mail boxes along our roads,  died out. Now its a cardboard box from the shop.

One day we were taken to town and a bus pulled up,  my Aunty had organised a trip the Cape Reinga on a tour bus. My cousin and I went alone. The bus driver talked all the way describing the area and what we would see. Two oceans met at the top of the Island and we could see the waves crashing into each other along the line.  I was amazed.
There was also a letter box you could purchase a card and post  it from the top of New Zealand.

On the way back we stopped at a huge sand dune and some people sat on sacks and shot down the dunes. Yuck too sandy for me 🙂, we were taken back to town and went home worn out with excitement.

On another day we went up behind the lovely old house to the Gum fields, when NZ was colonised, a lot of the men worked in the gum fields digging up gum .

There were still little huts and cooking pots though you did need to be careful not to fall into a hole.

It was a real holiday going there and for many years we helped out.

Hugs and take time to remember where you came from and who added joy to your life.

Sparkdoveseyes Week 08/28/2021

Good Morning,

Beauty says "Moo"

A quiet week this  week, rising working resting... we did go to the shops for provisions ..lots of fresh veges and fruit ... I baked ...scones, apple cake, made a Mushroom sauce/soup.

The men had roast potatoes last night ... good comments were made :)

On the knitting front, the chevron sweater proved that I knit very loosely doing just knit stitch and when the back was nearly finished I ripped it out and redid it. Then  started the front happy it would be the correct size.

This is the finished back.

This is the front so far. It has the chevron detail.

DD has announced the impending arrival of GC 3 for March ...a boy .. lovely.

Spring is on it's way so we are still getting the field fire ready ..an ongoing task.

I have been thinking a lot of New Zealand and my travels there, thought this may be new to some of you.

Sparkdoveseyes Blog 08/21/2021

Welcome to my blog today,

After finishing the Lemon and Lime cardigan, I looked for a new project and found this one.
Hubby had bought me some yarn and I like the look of the chevron in the middle, a pattern I had not done before. After undoing it twice I got the hang of it and am now nearly to the cast off for the Back to be finished.
During the week I also finished the Gothic Lace Scarf, started on 04/26/2021 and finished 08/19/2021. It was a large skein of different colors.  Very well written and easy to follow with written pattern and charts.

I loved making this one, such a beautiful pattern.

Oh Hubby has just given me a coffee and a warm scone ah ... lovely man.

He got up on the roof to repair the Hot water tank it needed a new element this week.  I was ground crew and turning on and off taps etc :)

We will turn our attention to the weeds today weather permitting .

Thinking of you all across the world, the seasons are changing, Nature just takes change in it's stride... the season it has and enjoys it. So do I  :)

Sparkdoveseyes Thru the Knitting Glass Today .... Welcome

Pattern by Wendy

Using Wendy DK

Cable Trimmed Raglan Sweater and Cardigan

 4mm needles

I used King Cole Melody DK in the colorway Apple shade 965

100%  acrylic

This is the sleeve and you can see the different yarn colors here, I call it my Lemon and Lime cardigan.

This is the cable that is in the raglan sleeve front and back.

This is the back see how the colors spread themselves across the work, well it was not that easy on the fronts or sleeves :). It took some winding of new balls to get the colors to look right. I think it looks great and with the green button bands I will put on it should all look 'like it was meant to be'.

I have run it passed Hubby who is fussier than me and he concurs it is good :)

These are the two fronts.

This is the neck line before I added the collar.

This is where it is so far, all sewn up and collar on ... just about to work the button bands today. Hubby says it will all work out :)

A fun knit with lovely yarn

Thanks for having a look I will post the finished... finished... item later :)

DD Sent Me Some Photos of the Truck Getting Stuck and the Tree

Hi there,

Welcome to today's blog, it has begun to rain ... Hubby and son are trying to burn the fallen limbs from the tree. The timber is soaked and Hubby has been coughing since getting wet last week. No temperature just the coughing.

This is the truck stuck in the fire break ... the timber on the right is the fallen 'branch' which is huge !!

The rope is tied to another tree to help extricate the truck from the mud :)

Of course Beauty wanted to see what was going on :)

So it continues today, DS has taken Thursday, Friday off and is helping to get the timber burnt and the fence fixed in the rain.

I watch youtube for my knitting enjoyment ... Not Quite Enough Yarn, Frivolous and Frugal  and Magpies Cottage are favorites.

Well this week Magpies Cottage announced if you had watched all the way through, subscribed and liked, the names would go in draw for a $10 off voucher, as they did each week.

It is getting harder and harder to watch on my laptop so Hubby put it on the TV (somehow ... he is amazing... my Wonder Phil), I watched it and then last weeks winner was announced....
It was my Username... gasp... the last time I won anything was when I was seven and really wanted to win the blue teddy printed cushion in a raffle ... and I did 🙂 !!!

I took a couple of days to think about it and jump up and down that I had won ... then realized I had a lot of yarn stash to use up and then sent off an email asking that they give the voucher to someone who came into the shop on my behalf, just thinking about it being given to someone who may need a treat was so wonderful for me.
They said they would do it 🙂

Next week I will blog on SP for the last time ... keeping my promise to my self...

"It's not how you start it's how you finish"

I am proud to have joined and gone all the way to the end, having found so many wonderful people along the way :).

I will close up my page and move on ... taking with me and keeping in my heart those of you who are my friends and companions in weight loss and caring for each other :)

Thankyou for stopping by to read,

Remember to  be kind to yourself and others,
Smiles are free, they can be seen in your eyes even with a mask on :)
